A young ruler asked Jesus what good thing he should do to have eternal life. Jesus named the commandments, and the man said he had kept them. Jesus loved him and exposed the one thing holding him: his possessions. He invited him to sell, give to the poor, and follow. The man left sorrowful, and Jesus taught how hard riches can make surrender.

The Bible Adventure
A young ruler asked Jesus what good thing he should do to have eternal life. Jesus named the commandments, and the man said he had kept them. Jesus loved him and exposed the one thing holding him: his possessions. He invited him to sell, give to the poor, and follow. The man left sorrowful, and Jesus taught how hard riches can make surrender.
Read the passage slowly and follow the setting, conflict, response, and outcome. Notice how it teaches that following Christ requires freedom from possession and generous love, not confidence in achievement. God acts in real history: He reveals His Son, confronts evil, welcomes outsiders, heals bodies and souls, forms disciples, and calls people into repentance and love.
