John preached in the wilderness, calling Israel to repent because the kingdom of heaven was near. People confessed sins and received baptism as a sign of turning. John confronted religious pride, told soldiers and tax collectors to practise justice, and announced One mightier than himself who would baptise with the Holy Spirit and fire.
