Introduction | مقدمة

God sent Elijah to a widow in Zarephath during the famine. She had only a handful of flour and a little oil, yet she trusted the promise and prepared food. The flour and oil continued. Later her son became gravely ill and died; Elijah carried the child upstairs, prayed earnestly, and God restored his life, turning fear into confession and hope.

The Bible Adventure

God sent Elijah to a widow in Zarephath during the famine. She had only a handful of flour and a little oil, yet she trusted the promise and prepared food. The flour and oil continued. Later her son became gravely ill and died; Elijah carried the child upstairs, prayed earnestly, and God restored his life, turning fear into confession and hope.

Read the passage slowly and follow the setting, conflict, response, and outcome. Notice how the account teaches that faith shares the little it has and discovers God’s sustaining mercy. God acts within real human history: He confronts idolatry and injustice, preserves life, receives repentance, forms servants, and keeps covenant even when His people are weak.

This episode belongs to the one saving story that prepares for and is fulfilled in Jesus Christ. We receive it with reverence, without inventing missing details, and ask how it corrects fear, pride, indifference, revenge, or unbelief in our own lives.

Coptic Orthodox Teaching

Christ later named this Gentile widow as a witness that God’s mercy crosses familiar boundaries. Her table and her son’s restoration prepare us to recognise divine hospitality, resurrection hope, and the Church’s care for widows and hungry households.

Orthodox interpretation holds the historical meaning, the unity of Scripture, and the Church’s worship together. A type points toward Christ without erasing the people or event, and every spiritual application must remain faithful to love, truth, repentance, and the apostolic faith.
